Moss and Lam - Toronto, Canada
Installation
We are inspired by the beauty of words that sparkle like stars in the night; phrases that embed themselves into memory and become manifested in our presentation, The Somnambulist.
Texts from Ernest Hemingway’s, "A Farewell to Arms", and Marcel Proust’s “Remembrance of Things Past" are displayed in the store windows with over-scaled fonts and glittering crystals, evocative of advertising.
We are drawn to the intimacy of these passages, yet we display them on a monumental scale, with materials used to promote luxury goods. With these contrasts we explore the poetics of viewing, the intersection of private and public thoughts, of contemplation and consumption, of natural and artificial beauty and the shift of consciousness in the night. For one fleeting moment, The Somnambulist displays the tension between romantic sentiments and coldly beautiful materials.
Moss and Lam is a Toronto-based custom art studio. Hovering between many conventions, their work delights and enhances experiences with visual poetry.
